Evershot

A small village in Dorset

Sport in Evershot

From our Sports Correspondent Paul Crate

As Evershot is a relatively small village, it is difficult to find enough people with the time and motivation to sustain a full team of players throughout a whole season, whether it's football, cricket, rugby or whatever.

Because of this, most of Evershot's sporting events happen infrequently. But the village support them well, and all those involved certainly make the most of them.

Evershot's local pub, the Acorn Inn, is the base for both the football and cricket teams, both teams having two matches a year on Bank Holiday weekends. The football matches are played against the Fox and Hounds at nearby Cattistock, while the cricket opposition is the Fox Inn from Corscombe. All matches are played in great spirit whilst still being competitive, and the after-match parties are often as much of an event as the games themselves.

Wakky Races

In the last few years an Evershot fund-raising event has grown in size and reputation into what is now an annual festival known as the 'Wakky Races'.

The event is a competition for teams of six people to take part in a number of crazy games over the course of the day in an attempt to win a trophy, raise money and ultimately have lots of fun.

In past years the 'It's A Knockout'-style event has been using games involving hundreds of gallons of water and dozens of eggs, with plenty of flour and sawdust thrown in as well. Extremely entertaining to watch if, for some reason, you don't fancy getting more deeply involved!

There is entertainment for children, a well stocked bar and BBQ, and prizes to be won throughout the day.

The Wakky Races have become a regular annual event.

And are the first event to be pencilled in every year.

The events are basically kids' games, but are devised strictly for adults. Every year we make a valiant attempt to make the games more twisted, so they become a combination of 'Krypton Factor' (without the brains), 'Crystal Maze' and 'It's a Knockout'.

Without any expense spent or knowhow required.

All participants (including referees) can guarantee that they will go home wet, dirty and very tired by the end of the day.

(A change of clothes is advised for competitors and any of the spectators who get too close.) All spectators are guaranteed a good laugh, your fair share of dampness, good beer and excellent food. Sounds like the perfect day out to me, but then I'm biased!

All the proceeds from the day go towards village hall funds.
